How to create a colorful and magical kids’ room

- With Maria Mostrup

A colorful family home in Randers where creativity blossoms

Maria, mother of Clara (4) and Anker (2), lives with her husband Mathias in a charming old house from 1919 in Randers. Together, they’ve created a warm and playful home where colors, creativity, and coziness go hand in hand.

The kids’ rooms are full of personality - with space for wild ideas, quiet moments, and the everyday magic of childhood.

Color is more than decoration - it’s a feeling

In Maria’s home, color plays a central role in everyday life - not just as decoration, but as a way to create mood, energy, and warmth. The kids’ rooms are no exception. Walls, curtains, and even ceilings bring splashes of personality and playfulness into the space. “There’s something uplifting about rooms with color,” Maria says. “It brings joy into everyday life - especially in the rooms where our children grow, play, and dream.”

Spaces for imagination and play

Clara and Anker’s rooms are designed for play. There’s space for pillow forts, messy art, and 20 drawings taped together. “We want our kids to feel that their ideas matter,” Maria says. “Their rooms should feel like their own little worlds.”

From a reading nook to a floor full of train tracks, every detail is made with kids in mind. Materials are easy to reach, and there’s no pressure to keep things tidy all the time - because in this home, creativity is meant to flow freely.

A dash of color + a pinch of imagination = everyday magic

Maria believes it’s the small touches that turn a room into a world of its own. A colorful toy basket, fun cups for snacks, or a garland strung across the wall - little details that spark joy.

Her best advice? Say yes more often. Yes to color. Yes to wild ideas. Yes to turning a box into a rocket ship. And most of all, be part of it. Sit down, join the fun, and let your child’s imagination shape the space - one colorful detail at a time.
