Set a summer table

with Maria Mostrup

For Maria Mostrup, summer is all about enjoying the little moments - sun on your cheeks, kids playing in the garden, good friends dropping by, and homemade pizza straight from the family’s pizza oven. We had a chat with Maria about summer days in Randers, her always-colorful table settings, and how she creates that lovely, relaxed feeling on the terrace - the kind of feeling you just want to stay in for hours.

A summer day full of good moments

Maria lives in Randers with her husband Mathias, their children Clara and Anker - and a little baby growing in her belly. When she describes the perfect summer day, it is very clear what matters most: time with the people she loves.

“The sun is shining, we put up the bouncy castle in the garden and fill up the paddling pool. Good friends with kids come by, the children play in the garden, and we adults enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace. In the evening, we make homemade pizza and eat together.”

And gathering family and friends around the table means something special to Maria.

“I love creating beautiful memories with the people I care about. I’m a true enjoyer of life, and I never want to miss out on the cozy moments.”

The little moments of summer

For Maria, it’s often the simplest things that make summer feel magical.

Trips to the beach. Creative projects with the children using treasures found in nature. Fresh strawberries, sweet peas, and flowers in full bloom.

“When the weather is good in Denmark, there really is nowhere I’d rather be than in our garden.”

A summer table can be both beautiful and practical

When Maria sets a summer table, color is always part of it. But it also has to work in real life – with kids reaching for more pizza, adults sharing a bottle of wine and no one worrying too much about spills.

“I love setting the table with rice. It is beautiful and colorful, but also really practical in the garden and with kids running around. I enjoy creating a table full of lovely colors, without having to worry about a glass or plate tipping over and breaking. It just makes me relax a little more.”

According to Maria, the secret to a table that feels put together is to let a few colors repeat.

“Pink is almost always my go-to. I use it in several places and in different materials. At the same time, I like the base to be more neutral - for example a wooden table or a linen tablecloth.”

Flowers make all the difference

Maria loves using seasonal flowers and letting nature help set the mood.

" “I love picking flowers that are in season and letting them bring atmosphere to the table.”

Maria’s 3 best tips for a beautiful summer table

  • Colorful tableware
  • Fresh flowers
  • Delicious summer food

For Maria, it’s not about perfection in the end. It is about gathering the people you love, making memories together, and soaking up those long summer days.

Food - friends - pizza - summer coziness… what more do we need?!
