Product informations

At rice, we put a lot of love and care into everything we make. We love bringing color and small everyday magic moments into your home - with products designed for real, everyday life, again and again.

On this page, you’ll find a simple, easy overview of the materials we use in our products. You can read about how to treat and care for them, so they stay beautiful for as long as possible. And because many of our products are also made for food and drinks, you’ll of course find the key information about testing and product safety too - so you can use them at home with confidence.

Raffia

A material full of charm
Raffia is one of our all-time favorite materials - and with good reason. It’s natural, beautiful, and full of charm. Grown on raffia palms in Madagascar, raffia is strong, flexible, and made for everyday living. At rice, we love raffia for its warmth and personality - no two pieces are ever quite the same, and that’s exactly the point.

Why we love raffia
We’ve worked with raffia since the very beginning - and we’re still just as in love. Every rice raffia product is handmade in Madagascar, where our production supports over 300 local families. It’s slow, skilled work. For example, it can take four people up to 38 hours to make a full set of our popular storage houses. That’s not just craft - that’s care.

Natural variation is part of the story
Because raffia is a natural fiber, each strand is unique. And since we dye it by hand using AZO-free Basic Dye, the final color depends on everything from sun exposure to how much dye each fiber absorbs. The result? Beautiful, slightly varied tones - and no two items exactly alike. That’s the charm of working with nature.

Caring for raffia
Raffia is durable - but like all natural materials, it needs love.• Avoid water, as the color might rub off• Don’t leave in direct sunlight, as it can fade over timeWe’re proud of our raffia. It’s natural, handmade, and full of soul. And that’s exactly why we’ve chosen it.

Melamine

A material full of possibility
Plastic plays a quiet – but essential – role in modern life. From how we move to how we eat, play, and connect – plastic supports it all. It’s strong, lightweight, and flexible – ideal for both everyday use and life on the go. At rice, we love plastic because it works. It’s practical, durable, and full of possibility.

Why we love melamine
We use different types of plastic across our product range – but melamine is by far the most used. It’s a premium type of plastic known for its strength, long lifespan, and glossy surface. We’ve worked with it from the very beginning. Our melamine tableware is designed to be used again and again – and still look great through countless meals, dishwasher cycles, and family picnics.

Tested, trusted, and made to shine
Food safety is a top priority for us. All our plastic products are tested thoroughly to meet strict EU standards for food-contact materials. Our tests show we are well below the permitted limits for substances like formaldehyde and melamine.Melamine testing: To make sure our products hold up, we simulate tough real-life conditions – filling them with food-grade acetic acid heated to 70°C, repeating the test three times. This ensures they’re safe, reliable – and ready for everyday use.

Caring for your plastic
Our plastic is made to last - but like any material, it needs care.• Replace the item if the surface turns dull, cracks, or chips• Dishwasher safe, but not suitable for microwave or oven useWe’re proud of our plastic. It’s strong, beautiful, and made for real life. And that’s exactly why we’ve chosen it.

Ceramic

A material with history
Ceramics have been loved for centuries - and we completely understand why. Made from natural clay and fired at high temperatures, ceramic is strong, long-lasting, and perfect for everyday life. At rice, we love ceramics because they feel good in your hands, look beautiful on the table, and bring something special to even the simplest moments.

Why we love ceramics
Ceramic is both practical and beautiful. It handles heat and cold with ease, is dishwasher-friendly, and brings a timeless quality to the table. Some of our ceramics are even hand-painted - brushstroke by brushstroke - which makes every piece unique and full of heart. These are items to be used, loved, and passed on.

Each piece tells its own story
Because our ceramics are partly handmade, small variations are part of the charm. Slight differences in color or tiny cracks in the glaze may appear over time - and that’s totally normal. It’s what gives each item its own personality.

Caring for ceramics
Most of our ceramics are dishwasher- and freezer-safe - but always check the label. • Avoid oven temperatures above 240°C • Don’t move dishes directly from freezer to oven  We’re proud of our ceramics. They’re practical, personal, and made to last. And that’s exactly why we’ve chosen them.

products informations

Ceramics

Most of our ceramics are dishwasher and freezer safe, but we always recommend checking the specifications for each item. Small cracks may appear over time - this cannot be avoided, as clay is a “living” material. Our ceramics are hand painted, so no two pieces are exactly alike, which is part of what makes them special.

Earthenware (ceramics)

A few items are made from earthenware. Earthenware allows bright, clear colors, but the clay is more fragile than porcelain or stoneware and should be treated accordingly. Earthenware may chip if handled roughly, and it is not intended for oven use.

Enamel

The surface of our enamel products can crack if not handled carefully. Over time, enamel will develop small scratches and a more matte finish - this is natural. Most enamel products are not dishwasher safe, so always check the item specifications.

Melamine

We love the many possibilities melamine offers, which is why a big part of our range is made in this material. Our melamine is of very high quality, which matters to us because we focus strongly on reusability and reducing waste. rice melamine products are long-lasting, durable, and made to be used again and again. They are approved by the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and tested food safe. Melamine is not suitable for the microwave and may break if exposed to a hard shock or blow. Over time the surface can become matte, and then it’s time to replace the product. Melamine items are dishwasher safe on a standard program at 60-70°C.

Plastic

All our plastic products intended for food and drinks are tested food safe and meet Danish and EU requirements. They are also free from phthalates and BPA. Most plastic food products can be used in the microwave but always check the declaration on the specific item. If the product fades, becomes matte, or shows cracks, it should be discarded. Most lids for food storage are not dishwasher safe.

Porcelain

Porcelain is strong, durable, and non-porous. It has a long lifetime and can safely go in the dishwasher and be heated in the microwave or oven. Porcelain dishes can also be used for storing food in the freezer. Even though porcelain is strong, it can break if handled roughly.

Raffia

At rice, we love raffia. It is a natural and beautiful material that we have used since our very first basket. All our raffia comes from Madagascar, where it is handmade and supports more than 300 local families. Raffia fibers come from palm leaves and very naturally in color, which makes every piece unique. We dye the material with Basic Dye, which is free from AZO substances. Avoid water and direct sunlight, as colors may rub off or fade over time. Raffia is a true natural material, full of charm, craftsmanship, and heart.

Silicone products

Make everyday life easier and more fun with our silicone products in beautiful colors. You’ll find everything from straws and bowls to lids and tableware. All silicone products intended for food and drinks are food safe, approved according to Danish and EU standards, and are suitable for both microwave and dishwasher. Our baking molds are also oven safe. Silicone is soft, durable, and ideal for children - easy to hold and comfortable to bite, helping little ones learn to eat on their own. Our silicone is high quality, reusable, and free from BPA and phthalates. Silicone products for children are not suitable for the oven, and strongly colored foods may cause staining.

Stainless steel

Our stainless-steel products are high quality and safe for food and drinks. Bottles should be hand washed and kept clean to maintain function and appearance. Avoid abrasive cleaners, soaking for long periods, and carbonated drinks. Be careful with hot liquids and check the silicone seal regularly to avoid leakage.

Stoneware (ceramics)

Our oven dishes are made of stoneware. Stoneware is fired at very high temperatures, making it suitable for oven use. It should not be exposed to more than 240°C. Never put stoneware straight from the freezer into the oven, as the sudden temperature change may cause cracking.

Textiles

At rice, we love all things soft - from cozy blankets to airy cushions that add comfort and color to your home. We set high standards for quality and never compromise, whether it’s textiles or furniture. In our production we focus on recycling and minimizing waste - a responsible choice we are proud of. To care for your textile products, follow the washing instructions and avoid direct sunlight.

Wood products

We love wood combined with colors - whether it’s chopping boards, dish brushes, wooden spoons, or salad cutlery. We use different types of wood, and all wooden items must be washed by hand. This means rice wood products are not dishwasher safe.
