Cozy balcony inspiration with colors, textiles and flowers

Ann-Sofie, Mathias and their little Otto, who live in Copenhagen, have created an outdoor space filled with colors, textiles and everyday moments. For them, the balcony is not just extra square meters - it is a natural extension of their home.

“Our balcony means so much to us - it feels like an extra room in the apartment,” says Ann-Sofie.

“As we move into the spring months, the door is almost always open from morning until evening.”

This is where they enjoy morning coffee in the sunshine, long summer evenings with dinner under the open sky and small peaceful breaks in the middle of a busy everyday life. Even a small apartment balcony can feel like a little sanctuary with the right colors, plants and cozy details.

Make room for personality

Ann-Sofie finds inspiration for her balcony styling through Instagram and interior magazines, but for her, the balcony is first and foremost about creating a space that feels personal and relaxed.

“I think there’s something special about mixing new and vintage pieces. I love different shapes and sizes of pots, mixed flowers and plants and lots of colors and patterns on textiles.”

It is exactly this mix that brings the balcony to life.

How colors create a cozy balcony

For Ann-Sofie, colors play a big role in the décor - especially as summer gets closer.

“I love using colors in interior styling to create life and energy. Small colorful elements like lanterns, soft cushions and blankets can make such a big difference.”

The atmosphere on the balcony can be transformed with just a few simple touches. Fresh flowers in the pots, a blanket over the chair, a cushion in a new color or a lantern glowing as the evening sets in. Small details that make the space feel new again.

Getting the balcony ready for spring

When spring approaches, Ann-Sofie starts completely from scratch.

“I clear the whole balcony, wash, scrub and oil everything again. There’s nothing better than decorating it all over again with fresh flowers and new cushions and blankets.”

For her, the balcony is always one of the very first real signs of spring. Everything is refreshed, the colors are brought back to life, and the balcony becomes ready for morning coffee, playtime on the floor and long evenings wrapped in blankets.

To make the most of the season, the family uses both a patio heater, blankets and a parasol, allowing them to enjoy the balcony from the very first days of spring well into autumn.

Ann-Sofie’s 3 best tips for a cozy balcony

1. Fill it with flowers and herbs

Use balcony boxes and pots to create life, color and fragrance. Mix flowers, green plants and herbs to create atmosphere and charm.

2. Use textiles and small details

Cushions, blankets and small decorative elements make the balcony feel more personal. It’s also an easy way to change the atmosphere from season to season.

3. Choose furniture carefully

Go for a few functional pieces of furniture and avoid turning the balcony into a storage space. There should be room to sit, relax and enjoy the moment.

rice favorites for the Balcony

For Ann-Sofie and her family, the colorful cushions and blankets from rice have become favorites on the balcony.

“They help create a cozy and colorful atmosphere. We use them in the lounge furniture, for playing on the floor and for wrapping ourselves up on chilly evenings.”

With flowers, textiles and small colorful details, the balcony becomes a little sanctuary in the middle of the city - a place for morning coffee, bare feet, evening sunshine and everyday magic outdoors.
